Today's Review: The FIRM Power Half Hour
Emily Welsh, 2008 *** (3 of 5 stars)
This is a quick 31 minute cardio and sculpting interval workout. It is quick moving and will give you a good workout. You can heavy up a bit in the strength work or you can keep it light and use this as a cardio workout. You will need a variety of dumbbells for this workout. There are 2 background exercisers with Kelsie providing the beginner modifications. The set is the hardwood floor, window scenery, white wall set.
Emily moves fast and at times is just all over the place-one rep of this, one rep of that, add a jack here. I think she would have been better off doing fewer moves with more reps of each move to avoid the rushed feeling and confusion on the users part. The workout is so short that by the time you figure out her little routines, its time to move on to something else. If it werent for this-I think I would really like this one.
The cardio segments include some power bursts like flying jacks and plyos so you can get your heartrate up nicely with this one. The strength segments are mostly combo moves with a lot going on- a side lunge with a bicep curl and an inner thigh leg sweep. I do think the strength segments are more strength oriented than just light 4-limb work though.
I would rate this higher intermediate because of the power bursts and the tricky choreo in some spots. This could easily be modified up or down to fit your needs though.
Craft: Heres a picture of the cool Hello Kitty curtain my mom made me! I took the doors off my closet to make more space. My workouts & equipment must multiply on their own-I swear I dont buy this stuff???
Today's Tip: Tips from 95 year old Jack LaLanne (from Barry's Bootcamp website)
1. LaLanne works out for two hours each morning. – That’s well ahead of the government’s recommendation of 60–90 minutes per day.
2. He eats at least 10 raw vegetables and five fresh fruits a day. – Again, that’s about double what the Food Pyramid suggests. And to help others achieve the same consumption levels, he was instrumental in making juicers popular. His motto: “That’s the power of the juice!”
3. He’s still passionate about spreading the merits of regular exercise and good nutrition. – Numerous studies suggest that having a passion in life extends the lifespan.
4.He rises at five o’clock each morning to stretch, lift, pull and swim. – Notice that this regimen covers all the qualities of a solid workout: warm-up, aerobics, weight resistance and stretching.
5. He has used his milestone birthdays to set new fitness goals and challenges for himself. – To commemorate his 70th year, he “towed 70 boats carrying 70 people across Long Beach Harbor, with both hands and feet shackled.”
6. He minces no words when it comes to slackers: “Would you give your dog a cup of coffee, a cigarette and a doughnut in the morning? Would you put garbage in your car’s gas tank? Well, why do that to your human machine? It’s killing us.”
